Swim15

I'm fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK

Two things you may or may not know about me!

1- I've just started open water swimming.

2- I lost my very dearest friend Elizabeth last year to the cruellest of diseases, Bowel Cancer, her death I feel could've been avoided if she had been diagnosed properly in the early stages.

Therefore I am challenging myself to swim 15 kilometres in August in memory of Elizabeth, I'm sure she will be with me for every stroke, willing me on, with the odd 'oh no' or ' I say Jayne' (Those of you who knew Elizabeth will understand 🤣)

This one's for you my friend, I miss you every day. 💔🌻

Bowel Cancer UK is the UK's leading bowel cancer charity and we're determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.

I’m diving into Swim15 this August and raising money to help save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. The money I raise will help to provide support and information to patients and their families, fund and support research into bowel cancer and support campaigns for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all.

Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cancer killer with more than 16,500 people dying annually of a disease that is preventable, treatable and curable.

Saturday Leisure Centre Swim

Saturday 31st Aug
(Forgot to take a selfie 🤳)

Early morning at the Leisure Centre

Saturday 31st Aug
In a bid to get a few more kms in, very conscious it's 31st Aug and I've a little way to go, I got up early and headed off for the 6.30am swim at the Leisure Centre in Hinckley.

50 minutes later I'd clocked up 60 lengths which my calculator tells me is 1.5km 👏

Not too bad an experience,  missed seeing wildlife pottering about their day but people watching was OK!

Not loving the smell of chlorine now though 🤣

Total 10.7km
Remaining 4.3km

Thursday at Burton

Saturday 31st Aug
A return to the first place I tried open water swimming, I haven't been back for a while but it was a welcome return,  lovely peaceful and clean setting where I felt unrushed, unlike last week at Dosthill!

Swam with swim buddy Craig as Claire was poorly 😢

A lovely 2 laps, water was surprisingly warm and itcwas a lovely still evening,  we got out just as the sun was coming down.

Bit of a hairy drive home, some idiot overtaking a car and horse box on a blind bend 🤯

Total 9.2km
Remaining 5.8km

Thursday at Dosthill

Sunday 25th Aug
Thursday 22nd August at Dosthill

Tonight's swim was a really tough one with swim buddy Claire.  We aren't sure why but we both found it hard going, we had planned three laps but ended with two clocking up 1km.

There was only a couple of other people on the water, it was overcast and chilly, we ended up discussing wetsuits (in August!)

As we got out of the water and changed Claire ordered her usual hot chocolate 🍫 however we felt rushed by the staff who were locking up and shooing us out at 7.45pm (our swim was until 8pm) this put an unfortunately poor feeling to the end of a difficult swim 😒

Total 8.1km
Remaining 6.9km

Tuesdays Full Moon Swim

Sunday 25th Aug

Tuesdays Full Moon swim

Sunday 25th Aug
Tuesday 20th August
First swim in the dark 🌚

A very different swim tonight at a new venue Race Hub at Frisby Lakes with swim buddies Claire and Craig clocking up 1.5km.

I was a bit anxious about this one and it was cold and breezy on the bank before the swim.  We entered the water at dusk and on the third lap round the full moon could be seen between the trees, truly beautiful.  Everyone had been given a glow stick and some had head lights etc so it was a pretty sight.

When we got out it felt really cold and was pitch black, trying to dress on the banks was interesting to say the least, thankful for the torch on my phone to find clothing I'd dropped 🤣

The drive home felt endless topped off by an M69 closure 😫

Wild swim in the River Thames

Monday 19th Aug

First wild swim - in the River Thames!

Monday 19th Aug
Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th August
My first 'Wild' swim

This weekend we were lucky enough to be camping at a beautiful site on the banks of the River Thames between Henley and Marlow, however in the back of my mind I needed to get my kms in for #Swim15

I'd forgotten my tow float but managed to borrow one from a fellow camper 🥰
So with my spotters, Hubby and pooch Mr Pickles in I went! If you're thinking 'The River Thames 🤮'  you're wrong, the water was beautifully clear with lots of fishes and I was joined by a couple of swans, some coots and a few geese!

It was a new experience dodging the many boats and paddle boarders but surprisingly warm. However I underestimated the current in the middle so stuck to swimming at the sides clicking up 1.5km

Total 5.6km
Remaining 9.4km

Wednesday at Dosthill Quarry

Wednesday at Dosthill Quarry

Wednesday 14th Aug

A lovely swim tonight with swim buddy Craig (Claire's on her hols) an overcast drizzley start but finished in sunshine.
Chilly on entry but nice once I was in. The water was smooth and it was a comfortable swim.

Three laps clocking up 1.5km.

Total 4.1km
Remaining  10.9km

Sunday at Dosthill Quarry

Saturday at Six Hills 1.1km

Sunday 11th Aug

Saturday at Six Hills 1.1km

Sunday 11th Aug
Slow start to my challenge yesterday following a period of sickness 😷

Back at it with my swim buddy Claire.

Ticked off 1.1km at the beautiful Six Hills, it was tough, cold and choppy down the first straight, few clothing issues along the way 🤣

Beautiful environment,  we were joined by some geese.  Topped off with a flat white and toasted tea cake.

If you've not sponsored yet, please do, it's for a very worthwhile cause in memory of my dearest friend .

Keep swimming 🏊‍♀️ 🙂
