My Diagnosis

Wednesday 2nd Apr
Last summer, I'd been experiencing streaks of blood in my poo for a few weeks and knew this was abnormal; I'd never had it before! I've no history of haemorrhoids or inflammatory bowel conditions.

To say I was scared was an understatement, as both my Mum and her late sister (my Auntie) had bowel cancer 10 years ago. My Mum actually had the same symptom as me.

My GP didn't seem concerned about my symptom however, due to my youngish age and she was convinced it was an infection. After my 3rd attempt at speaking to her on the phone, she agreed to see me and her whole demeanour changed when she felt 'something' during a rectal examination.

A colonoscopy detected a 2.5cm polyp in my low rectum, which was removed there and then. I was informed by the endoscopist that even though it looked benign, there was a chance it could be harbouring an invasive cancer. This proved to be correct, and there I was...now a cancer patient.

This was a hard pill to swallow, BUT I'm so pleased  that I had a symptom. So many people don't! I think it enabled me to catch it at its earliest stage. It was decided that I don't need any further treatment but I'll be under intensive surveillance for the next 7 years, as there's a chance it will return.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones. I'm particularly disturbed by the rise of cancer cases in the under 50s; I've seen this in the last 10 years of working with seemingly young and fit cancer patients. The statistics bear this out. Please listen to your body, nobody knows it better than yourself. If anything feels off, don't bury your head in the sand and ensure that you advocate for yourself until you get an answer.

Your sponsorship means so much to me.

Lots of love, Sarah x
