I'm fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK
Our story:
In February 2023 my husband, Richie went to the GP for symptoms of bleeding when wiping his bum. He was told its likely to be a haemorrhoid. After physical examination he was reassured it was nothing to worry about.
On 24.10.23 he went back to the GP, still experiencing the same symptoms. This was spurred by a family friend who spoke of their cancer diagnosis, despite not having any symptoms.
During this appointment an abnormal polyp was found. On 15.12.2023 we receive his Cancer diagnosis. A biologically aggressive tumour found in his rectum and to increase his survival chance he had major surgery to remove his anal passage, rectum and part of his colon, he was be fitted with an irreversible colostomy bag.
Richie comes from a family of no bowel/colorectal history, he is 32, and has no risk factors linking him to Rectal Cancer.
The consultant feels this tumour had been growing anywhere between 18 months to 2 years. We will live on and wonder what may have happened had the tumour been identified during his initial appointment.
Richies tumour was removed on 22.12.2023 this was found to be larger than suspected (T3, to those who understand), it spread to 6/42 lymphnodes, we were advised this is poorly differentiated and risk this may have invaded his veins, these factors carry a huge risk of spread.
Richie is due to receive his first cycle of chemotherapy on 12.3.2024 to reduce this risk. This will be our most challenging time yet, whilst Richie undergoes treatment I aim to set my own challenge to be active (ok this may be easier than..) and sober everyday in April.
Anyone who knows Richie would agree he is one of the fittest and most active humans. Being active was once thought to be a pleasure, but is now considered a luxury when you realise how quick Cancer can take this from you. Richie will join me on this challenge when he can, because he's a warrior.
I hope to raise awareness and money for Bowel Cancer UK. This is the UK's leading bowel cancer charity who are determined to save lives. I'm taking part in ActiveApril and raising money to help save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. The money I raise will help to provide support and information to patients and their families, fund and support research into bowel cancer and support campaigns for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all.
Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cancer killer with more than 16,500 people dying annually of a disease that is preventable, treatable and curable.
