We are fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK

In August 2023, our dad/Amaya’s ‘Gaga’ was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel cancer. He took part in routine bowel cancer screening when he turned 60 in June, but didn’t think anything of it having no symptoms. Multiple tests, scans & appointments later, we were told it was inoperable and chemotherapy was the only option. He completed 12 weeks of chemo and after a second opinion from Birmingham, he underwent Cytoreductive Surgery & HIPEC just under 3 weeks ago. This is a highly specialised & major operation (around 8hrs long) for when cancer has spread to the peritoneum. It involves removing all visible tumours, followed by a ‘hot chemo wash’ to kill cancer cells that are too small to be seen. Today (01/04/24) he is finally being discharged home to continue his recovery! We will forever be grateful to dads incredible surgeon and just how far medicine has come along.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and we are taking part in ActiveApril - doing something active every day in April, raising money and awareness for Bowel Cancer UK, the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity - determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. The money we raise will help to provide support and information to patients and their families, fund and support research into bowel cancer, and support campaigns for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all.

There is a lot of information pushed out around recognising signs & symptoms to catch it early, but unfortunately for some people there are no warning signs. This is why screening is so important, and since April 2021, the NHS in England have been gradually reducing the age range for screening, which should eventually include people from the age of 50 by April 2025.

Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer with more than 16,500 people dying annually of a disease that could be preventable, treatable and curable.

Tuesday 30th Apr
Last day of Active April! I walked Maisie and then came home and did a leg workout, mainly squats!! Eek! Dame and I have been ski-erging and cycling most mornings too. We have quite enjoyed it and plan on doing #MovementMay now! Haha! X

Phoebe

Saturday 27th Apr
Bit of a different one today! Have been working a lot this week so a lot of steps/walking. Had today off so went to Gripped (outdoor adventure park similar to Go Ape) sounds fun but it is SCARY when you are terrified of heights like me! Zip wires, high ropes & the biggest challenge - ‘free-falling’ from a 24 metre tower!! Video of me doing it is on my Instagram & Facebook but here is a picture of it. Shook like a leaf at the top & cried at the bottom but so proud of myself for doing it 💪👊

Beth

Tuesday 23rd Apr
4k run before work this morning, followed by 300 lunges around my garden.. ouch, my legs will hurt tomorrow!

Phoebe

Tuesday 23rd Apr
Evening Run - My first 5k of ActiveApril!! 🏃🏻‍♀️🥳 the amount of times I have ran around Battersea Park this month… just 1 week to go. Thank you everyone for all of your donations so far 🫶🏼

Sunday 21st Apr
No I didn’t run the marathon… but just thought I’d share this picture I took today! Finished nightshifts yesterday morning but have made sure to still get my steps in this weekend! I have done 45,000 steps Friday-Sunday! Feeling motivated to give it my all for the rest of ActiveApril after watching all of the amazing runners today! 🏃‍♀️💪 was so lovely to see lots of people running for Bowel Cancer UK/Bowel Research UK too!

Beth

Sunday 21st Apr
Ive just finished an early morning gym session after running a 5k yesterday morning, and doing 300 lunges round my garden the day before! Just over a week to go now 👊

Phoebe

Saturday 20th Apr
Was meant to post this yesterday! Another pre nightshift run & my furthest & fastest pace yet! (Honestly hats off to anyone who has ran/is running the marathon tomorrow because 🥵)… my aim was to run 5k comfortably by the end of #ActiveApril - I will definitely run 5k but I think you can take the word comfortably out 😂

Phoebe

Wednesday 17th Apr
We have been sent 2 ActiveApril hoodies for raising over £500! I have been wearing mine on my runs (until about 5 minutes in when it gets chucked around my waist because I’m too hot 😂). 2 weeks left!!

Phoebe

Wednesday 17th Apr
Yesterday’s evening run after finishing my nightshifts! Running on very little sleep in the wind and rain was HARD 😰 but what a beautiful sunset view to finish! Thank you everyone for helping us raise over 2.5k, do you think we can reach £3,000?!

Beth

Tuesday 16th Apr
2nd run completed after a cycle again yesterday. Whenever I feel tired, I think about the strength and courage of my dad & all of those affected by cancer and this motivates me to keep going! It's not always about the adversity in your life.. its how you deal with that adversity. Always have hope & keep going! ❤️

Phoebe

Sunday 14th Apr
Sunday morning pre nightshift interval run! 🏃‍♀️🌞

Beth

Saturday 13th Apr
3k jog to start the day with 🐕 Amaya isn't sleeping well at the moment which is exhausting but #ActiveApril must go on!

Beth

Thursday 11th Apr
We are still going - promise! Phoebe has been walking everyday to and from her 12 hours shifts as a nurse & I've been walking my dog (Maisie), cycling and gymming! Thanks again for all the donations, dad loves reading all your kind words x

Phoebe

Sunday 7th Apr
First day back at work for me today. I would normally get the bus but I walked there and back (35 minutes each way). 12.5hr shift and over 12,000 steps later…

Beth

Sunday 7th Apr
6 mile cycle in 25 mins - After a mini op myself at the start of this month, I've been taking it fairly easy and increasing my activity steadily. This fundraiser has been the motivation I've needed ❤️

Phoebe

Saturday 6th Apr
Day 6 -first outdoor run in 6 months 🥵 couch to 5k 🏃‍♀️ a lap and a bit of Battersea Park until I got a stitch and nearly collapsed 🙃😂

Day 5 ♥️

Friday 5th Apr
Beth - 2 mile walk & a home gym workout.
Phoebe - 30 minute home workout.

Only 5 days in and nearly at our goal of £2000 - thank you so much everyone x x

Dads message:

Thursday 4th Apr
I would just like to say thank you to everyone for the amazing support and contribution to this cause that is close to our hearts, means so much to me. But more importantly it’s the love and friendship that you have shown my 2 amazing daughters. Even in the darkest days they stood by me and like myself refused to accept any negativity that was thrown at us be it from the NHS or people with a none positive attitude. When the consultant told the 3 of us it was inoperable I remember Phoebe steadfastly refusing her statement and arguing of the alternative possibilities, that’s the one and only time I cried in public not through pity but through pride. What amazes me is 7 months down the road they have done the exact operation Phoebe pushed for albeit in Birmingham where we were eventually referred. The whole ethos of the trust up there is totally different to Gloucester, as for my surgeon Umar Shariff I have never met a more talented yet humble person he always took the time to explain to the girls what was happening he is a perfect role model of what a human being should be and I will be forever in his and his teams debt. I will be sat on my sofa watching him do the London marathon for Bowel Research UK on the 21st which I have supported and proud to be his biggest sponsor/fan not only in cash terms but in total respect. Finally my little granddaughter Amaya kept us all happy throughout this time with her innocence of it all and just her total gifted way of capturing a room and audience. I’m very fortunate to have the 3 girls a great and loving family and some amazing friends that have stood by me through this also. Thanks everyone love to you all Nacho ❤️

Beth

Thursday 4th Apr
This is where I'll be ticking off a lot of #ActiveApril. Another 20 mins on the bike this morning & 20 minute weights last night.

Phoebe

Wednesday 3rd Apr
20 minute run (2.7k) followed by some weights with my personal trainer 😂🏃‍♀️💪 ran a 10k (once back in 2017) and determined to be able to run 5km comfortably by the end of the month!!

Beth

Wednesday 3rd Apr
Day 3 we go again 🚴

Long walk!

Tuesday 2nd Apr
This afternoon we went on a long walk with Maisie Dog and May May (Amaya fell asleep in her pushchair) but we have done over 9,000 steps! Walked to Sainsbury's to get dads shopping and then visited him this evening ♥️

Beth smashing out a 20 minute bike ride this morning!

Tuesday 2nd Apr
Day 2 💪🚲

Day 1 - 01/04

Tuesday 2nd Apr
Not sure why our ‘activity calender’ doesn’t have a tick in it for day 1 - I promise we were active!!

Beth - 20 minutes on the ski erg and a 40 minute dog walk!
Phoebe - 20 minute HIIT workout at home. Picked dad up from the hospital today so spent over 3hrs in the car (not so active)… but still had to squeeze something in! More exciting things to come…

Thank you to my Sponsors
