Walking 70km in April for Bowel Cancer UK

In 2016 I lost my 32 year old son to bowel cancer. He would have been 40 years old this year. In his memory, and to mark my 70th birthday, I have set myself this challenge. I will walk every day in April to achieve a minimum of 70km by the end of the month.

Bowel Cancer UK is the UK's leading bowel cancer charity and we're determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.

I’m taking part in ActiveApril and raising money to help save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. The money I raise will help to provide support and information to patients and their families, fund and support research into bowel cancer and support campaigns for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all.

Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cancer killer with more than 16,500 people dying annually of a disease that is preventable, treatable and curable.

Final Day

Tuesday 30th Apr
I started this challenge with a target of 70km in a month and to raise £250.00 in Peter’s memory. I wasn’t convinced I’d achieve it but Helen encouraged and helped me to get started and now it’s the last day of April. I’ve walked 162km which is about 100 miles and more importantly raised over £1200.00.  Typically today was rather drizzly so I went back to one of my firsts walks and discovered the swan still sitting on her eggs but now with rhododendrons and wild garlic out. We’ve got such beautiful walks around us. Once again a massive thank you to  everyone who has sponsored and encouraged me.

Chilly

Saturday 27th Apr
Not sure what’s happened to our April ‘heatwave’ but it stopped raining so managed another 7km .
Interesting to read an article from the ‘Bowel babe’ campaign also urging people of any age to be aware of the symptoms of Bowel Cancer and get any changes checked.
Thanks again everyone.

Two huge milestones

Monday 22nd Apr
I am totally amazed!
Today I’ve managed to achieve my second challenge of walking 110 km (70 for my age plus 40 for Peter) and, thanks to all your generous donations, over £1100.00 for Bowel Cancer UK. Wow!
Thank you so much.
Now to keep on walking. How far can I get in this last week?

Dry weather!

Thursday 18th Apr
I have been so lucky with the weather avoiding the downpours so far! Already I’m up to 90km and finding that I can walk different routes most days .  Great fun!
Longest walk so far has been 9.8 km and I’m finding that I want to get to a 10km walk. Maybe?

70km

Sunday 14th Apr
A beautiful day for a walk in the Sirhowy Valley and the 9.8km means that I have achieved my original goal of 70km.
I have been so amazed and encouraged by all of the generous donations and good wishes that I’m now going to try and complete an extra 40km representing Peter’s age.
Since Peter died, I have been a volunteer with Bowel Cancer UK and  I know that the money raised will make such a difference to the research projects, support for patients and awareness raising in the wider community.
Thank you again.
